Fear and Alternative Medicine
There is still so much fear around the use of alternative treatments and natural healing modalities.
Will this work?
Will it harm me?
Shouldn’t I be taking pharmaceuticals?
You may be conditioned to look at conventional medicine as the only way, yet there are three additional types of healing modalities to be addressed that have been gaining traction lately.
- Holistic Medicine is a form of healing that considers the whole person -- body, mind, spirit, and emotions -- in the quest for optimal health and wellness. According to the holistic medicine philosophy, one can achieve optimal health -- the primary goal of holistic medicine practice -- by gaining proper balance in life. com
- There is complementary therapy - this means you can use it alongside your conventional medical treatment. It may help you to feel better and cope better with treatment for whatever it is you’re going through.
- Alternative therapy is generally used instead of conventional medical treatment.
There has been an uptick in people seeking information on holistic, complementary and alternative healing, as I can see from my own Functional Medicine practice. As a licensed pharmacist, I explain to my clients that there is room for both conventional medicine and holistic medicine, utilized individually as needed and decided upon.
Perhaps the knowledge is there intuitively as well, as many are discovering the benefits of the sun, being outdoors, herbs, plants, essential oils, vitamins, and eating healthy and getting enough sleep.
What is coming to light is that a number of interesting studies show that one out of three patients are using alternative treatments but they are afraid to tell their doctors, according to medpagetoday.com. This is especially true for people that have chronic and/or life-threatening conditions such as AIDS, cancer and mental-health illnesses.
They find that the conditions they suffer with are not always adequately served by conventional medicine, so they seek alternative therapies and treatments.
The Body Can Heal Itself
During the pandemic, people began seeking all kinds of treatments to build up their immunity, and the long-term protection of naturally acquired immunity has been compared to immunity induced by pharmaceuticals. What was found by pubmed.com was the following conclusion:
Conclusion: Naturally acquired immunity confers stronger protection against infection and symptomatic disease caused by the Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2, compared to the two-dose v--induced immunity.
Regardless of what route each person decides is best for them, being open to understanding the benefits of holistic treatments adds an option to treatment and symptom reducing and prevention along with conventional medicine.
Below is part of a Facebook post, explaining how keeping an open mind can facilitate healing modalities available to all.
“I discovered that there is a parallel world, where there is hope and complete healing, and there are no statistics and numbers, there is me and my unique journey.
And the family doctor told me -
"You're a ginger girl, the sun hurts you.”
And all my childhood I escaped from the threatening sun, until I grew up and read that a high percentage of those diagnosed with MS (and other medical conditions) are found to have severe vitamin D deficiency.
And I started doing 'sun baths' (short in the summer and long in the winter) and my vitamin values in the blood went up wonders.
And the gastroenterologist told me –
"You have a problem in your bowel, it can turn into cancer". And then I learned that I can change my diet, and a change like this really changes my body and my bowel function.
I learned that the cells are constantly changing, so that I am creating a new body all the time, and it is up to whether to continue the awareness of the disease or create a healthy body.
I started to practice proper breathing, and I released tension and I conveyed to my body that everything is fine, and that as I am, it's really wonderful, and my pains are gone.
I had confidence that everything was fine. I went to my spiritual friends and consulted with them, and they strengthened my inner feeling that the doctor's diagnosis indicates more about him than me, and that invasive procedures are not always needed. The doctor and I broke up as friends. This happened about 20 years ago.
And the urologist told me - "You probably have a tendency to infections, and for the rest of your life you will need antibiotics, the doses are increasing. There is nothing to do".
And I have suffered for years. Then I researched and tested and discovered that my infections were the result of open and hidden anger. I did mental and spiritual work, and I changed my diet, and I learned to heal myself naturally, and gradually the infections decreased, until they disappeared.
"It's not good to walk barefoot", and "it's not nice to be exposed to the cold in the winter".
And then I discovered grounding, and the importance of our direct connection to the earth, and its healing powers.
At some point I understood that if I keep going to the doctors, they will definitely find something. I understood that the one who heals is the one who takes responsibility for his life, and that there is nothing wrong with conventional medicine, but there is another world that medicine does not know, a world of real health, real prevention and real healing.
Alternative – Complementary – Holistic – Conventional
Keep in mind that all modalities of healing can be used when appropriate and discussing this with your doctor as well as functional medicine practitioner will open up new ideas as prevention, symptom relief and cures.
As always, use your intuition as a guide for what is best for you and your family, and stay safe and healthy.
